Hollister Planting Publicity

The Rotaract Club of Santa Barbara and out work with Goleta Valley Beautiful for the Hollister Planting Project was featured in not one, but three city newspapers – the News Press, Daily Sound, and Valley Voice.

Hollister Avenue Anti-Graffiti Project

Just wanted to give an update on the work project we have going on tomorrow morning (June 16th). We will be clearing and planting 900 feet of vegetation. If anyone has any dollys or hoses, please bring them. We’ll mark them to make sure you’ll get your stuff back at the end of the day. Tools and equipment will be provided. Pizza and soda will be provided at 12:15 PM.

Also, with upwards of 50 volunteers, parking plus just physical space will be a a problem if we meet at Hollister and Evonshire. So we will probably end up meeting at Girls Inc.

Reserve a Spot at the Rotaract Anniversary Party

It’s time to celebrate ourselves and our supporters again. We’re having a party on July 16 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at a local Rotary member’s house in Santa Barbara.

You should be there! Whether you’re one of the founding members who got this thing started a year and a half ago, or whether you’re thinking of joining and want to come see what we’re about, you’re welcome to come enjoy good food, drinks and — most importantly — friends and networking.

Please RSVP as soon as possible to sb_rotaract@yahoo.com if you’d like to come. Free.

Apply Now to Study Abroad for a Year — Nearly Free!

Rotary offers a few Ambassadorial Scholarships each year, which pay tuition for a year of graduate study abroad.

If this is something you’ve been wanting to do, this is an amazing opportunity.

You can get the application here. If you’re interested, contact us and we’ll connect you with a Rotarian or two who can help you with the application process.

The new deadline is August 17.

Volunteers Wanted for Planting Project

Rotaract is joining seven local Rotary clubs and Goleta Valley Beautiful to plant vines, shrubs, trees and the like along Hollister Avenue. The project is designed to beautify a stretch of Hollister and to serve as a graffiti deterrent when they grow to full size, blocking the walls along the road.

We will be planting on June 16 from about 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers should show up at 8:45 a.m. to check in and get instructions.
Please RSVP to sb_rotaract@yahoo.com!
We’ll meet at the corner of Evonshire and Hollister. From Highway 101, take Turnpike toward the ocean. Take a right on Hollister, and Evonshire will be on your left. Limited parking exists along Evonshire, with overflow parking across the street in the Turnpike shopping Center.
Volunteers should wear old clothes that they are not afraid to get dirty, and sturdy shoes, preferably work boots. I recommend dressing in layers to prepare for any weather. You may want to bring water and a small snack.
Goleta Valley Beautiful will supply all equipment and materials. Experts from GVB will teach us how to do whatever we need!
What we’ll be doing:
  • installation of 100′ of rootshield using a ditch witch
  • installation of 10 fifteen gallon Island Oak trees (they are small. only about 2-3′ high) every 80′
  • installation of 90 1 gallon Aloe cilaris and Parthenocissus tricuspidata ‘Hacienda creeper’ every 7′ so. These are also small plants, and it will take several years for them to get to significant size.
  • installation of 900′ drip irrigation line and 300 emitters and ground staples
  • installing weedblock fabric along the entire 900′ with ground staples and covering it with a layer of mulch.

June Monthly Meeting

Our monthly meeting will be held tomorrow, June 5th, at 6:30 PM.  It will be at Rusty’s Pizza on Carrillo and Bath, in Downtown Santa Barbara. Please go straight upstairs and bring some extra cash for food.
