B-I-N-G-O

We’re going to try our luck at Bingo on Thursday, July 10th at Santa Barbara Elks Lodge located at 150 North Kellogg.  The fun starts at 7:00 and goes until around 10:00. “Buy-ins” are $20 and additional game packs are $5. There are also daubers on-sale for $1.  Drinks and snacks are also available.  So, get ready to get your bingo game on!

Tausend Dank! to Rita and Our German Friends

Although the German Rotaractors rolled in and out of Santa Barbara in their Chevy suburban all too quickly, we enjoyed their visit while they were here!

Rita, in the tank top in the photo above, was a phenomenal hostess. She took them on the Landshark, walked them to the mission (yes walked), had an ice cream cone at Ben & Jerry’s with them and shared her apartment with three of our five guests!

In the evening, 10 Americans and 5 Germans hit the town. After a very happy hour (or two) at Sandbar, we enjoyed dinner at Los Arroyos. Then the group went to Elsie’s to keep the conversation going.

Whether from the Black Forest, Munich or Berlin, they all had many stories to tell and great senses of humor. You are all welcome back anytime!

Downtown Hosts This Sunday

The Downtown Organization of Santa Barbara is looking for energetic, friendly volunteers to staff its new Downtown Host Program. As a volunteer you will welcome visitors and locals to the downtown area.  Help direct them to area shops, restaurants, cultural venues and historic sites while answering questions about transportation and handing out Downtown Map & Guides. As a volunteer for the Host Program, you will be a valuable resource for the community.

  • Rotaract has selected Sunday, June 29 as our service day.
  • Daily time commitment is 11:30 am – 4 pm, which includes a training session.
  • Volunteers will work in pairs covering various 2-3 block areas along State Street from Cabrillo Blvd. to Sola Street.
  • Volunteers receive free lunch and a Host Program hat or visor!
  • For more information or to sign up, please contact Dana.

We’re Part of a World Record

Rotary set a Guinness world record for the most books collected in a 7-day period by collecting 242,624 books for children in grades K-3 with the book drive at the Rotary International Convention earlier this month. Story here.

Our club donated 342 books. Thanks so much to everyone who contributed, especially big donors like Nilagia and Leana! Thanks also to everyone who helped carry them through the Los Angeles Convention Center!

The books will go to students in Los Angeles area schools.

Meet 5 German Rotaractors!

On Monday, June 23,** five members of Rotaract clubs in Germany will be hanging out in Santa Barbara. **NEW DATE

We got to meet them at the Rotaract Pre-Convention at the International Conference in Los Angeles, so we know they’re fun!

The plans are somewhat tentative, but we’ll likely go to a happy hour and dinner downtown. They’ll also be around during part of the day for those who don’t have to work.

If you want to hang out with them, contact Rita — ritanewhouse@hotmail.com — or Liz — sb_rotaract@yahoo.com. Be sure to include your phone number because we may not be able to confirm the plan until the actual day.

Improvements To Blow Your Mind

In our quest to have the Coolest Rotaract Website in the World, I have been working very hard with site fixes and improvements. I will explain each of the site features below so you can understand how to properly use them.

Live Search

You may have noticed that the search box on the right sidebar has changed. To search, simply type in your term (try “bowling”) and wait. You do not have to hit Enter. You also don’t have to press a Go or Search button for it to work.

Live Archives

Click on the tab labeled “Archives” and you can see a dynamically generated page of all our posts organized by date or taxonomy (tags). Want to see every post tagged with the word “trees”? Well, now you can.

Improved Navigation

At the top of the page you’ll see small navigation text. It should say “Older Page 1 of …” Click on this and you’ll be able to quickly navigate through all our posts, by month. Click on Trim and you’ll be able to shrink the posts down to just the titles and date, fitting more on the screen. Try it!

Calendar (Agenda View)

On the right hand side, you’ll see our club calendar in Agenda View. I realize some information is cut off but it should still prove useful.  If you click on the date on the top right, it’ll open up a small calendar for you to choose a date from. You can use the navigation arrows to move forward and backward months. If you ever get lost, or can’t tell what date you are on, simply press the Today button. If you want more information about any of the events, click on the name and it’ll expand. If you need even more information, click on the “more details” link.

Photos

Our photo gallery has been broken for ages but now it’s back and is new and improved. No more remembering obscure Flickr URL’s. Just click on the Photos tab and you’ll see all our galleries. When you find a set you like, click on it (on the left) and then on a picture. Whoa, what’s that? Don’t be afraid. See the lightbox effect?

About Us

I’ve added officer profiles and pictures to the About Us page. I think it puts a more personal touch to the club and website.

Documents

I mentioned this before but we are adding meeting agendas to the Documents page. I have also added the Rotaract brochure and handbook for your reading. How many of you actually know the goals of Rotaract?

Fonts

I’ve changed the font to something I think is more readable.
