Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk

The Alzheimer’s Association is hosting a 5K walk and they need volunteers for the event. It runs from 4:30 – 7:30 PM but help will be needed all day including setup from 9 AM to 1 PM and cleanup afterwards.

If you are interested in lending a hand to this great cause, you can contact Julie Ramos. We will discuss this and have a signup sheet at our next meeting as well.

Here’s the skinny:

What:    5K walk to raise funds that will directly contribute to better Alzheimer support programs
When:   Friday, September 12th; Time:    4:30 PM – 7:30 PM
Where:  Chase Palm Park

GVB Greenhouse

We will be working with Goleta Valley Beautiful at their greenhouse this Saturday 8/23 from 9A – 12P.

The Devereux Greenhouse is located along the unnamed extension of Storke Road that begins at El Collegio Road west of Isla Vista Elementary School and continue to Coal Oil Point.  One half mile from the intersection of Storke and El Collegio is a sign for Devereux Way, make a left and go up the hill for 50′ and make a right at the stop sign onto what is a circular road.  Go half way around the circle to an unnamed dirt road leading several hundred yards down to the Greenhouse.  You can park at the bottom next to the Growing Grounds/Greenhouse.

3 Minutes Could Help Fund a School in India

Deepa Willingham, a local Rotarian and mother of Rotaractor Reena, is the driving force behind an incredible education program for women in India. She’s trying to win a huge grant from American Express via an online popularity contest. Please help.

The program could win up to $1.5 MILLION dollars from American Express. Here’s info about the program your votes could support: www.paceuniversal.com

Rotaract Builds the Future of History

About a dozen Rotaract members teamed up on Saturday, August 16, to mold adobe bricks with the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation. The bricks will eventually be used to help rebuild walls of the historic adobe buildings of the presidio. (Editor’s note: I’m still sore.)

Here’s how it’s done:
1. Mix the adobe: The secret recipe is special dirt, oil (petroleum, not cooking), water and straw/hay. Shovel, pour, mix, repeat.
2. Fill wheelbarrows with the special sauce and roll to mold area.
3. Wet down the adobe frame and paper below, then pour mixture into 2-foot by 1-foot frames. Punch any air bubbles out of the mixture. Smooth the top of the bricks, wipe the top of the dividers on the frame and remove the frame.
4. Let dry in the sun 4-6 weeks.
More photos to follow, but see the pics here.
Thanks to Jennifer Wang for organizing this great event and to all of the volunteers who didn’t mind playing in the mud!
