Correction: Rotary Bike Ride

I made a mistake on the email that went out this afternoon. The bike ride is this Saturday, Jan 24th at 8AM. Sorry for any confusion it may have caused.

Goodbye Polio

Yesterday, Bill Gates, of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, spoke at the Rotary International Assembly and committed an additional $225M, on top of the $100 donated in 2007 (as a challenge grant). Germany and the United Kingdom have promised $280M over the next five years. Watch the video of the announcement below.

January 20 meeting cancelled

Our regularly scheduled meeting for Tuesday, January 20 has been cancelled so everyone will have a chance to watch the historical inauguration. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, February 3 where we will hear reports from our Rotaract-Rotary liaisons, enjoy a visit from the local Rotary Clubs, and find out more about the February 21 Rotarians at Work Day.

Lifehacker, Gizmodo, and GigaOm have tips on where you can watch it online.

Help make Goleta Valley beautiful

We hope you join us this Saturday, January 24 for our community service project. We will be helping Goleta Valley Beautiful at their greenhouse planting trees from 1:00 – 4:00 pm. Come grab a bite to eat at Camino Real before the project at noon, or meet us there to carpool at 12:45. For more information or to RSVP, email Dana at dana@sbrotaract.com.

A Rotaract Night Hike First

Last night a group of us headed up to San Ysidro Trail for our monthly full moon night hike. We’ve seen tarantulas, rattlesnakes and a scorpion before, but on this hike we spotted our first millipede. [Editor's note: We did not actually count the legs to confirm that it is not a centipede, but we made an educated guess. Is there an entymologist in the room?]

Thanks to everyone who joined the hike and star gazing. Since the moon was hiding on the other side of the canyon, we had great views of the night sky. We learned a couple of things about astronomy from Kellen.

Full Moon Night Hike

It’s time to hit the trail again. Monday, Jan. 12, we’ll meet at Montecito’s Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on Coast Village Road at 6 p.m. From there, we’ll carpool to the San Ysidro trailhead.

Bring: a headlamp or flashlight; warm clothes; sensible shoes; and water. You’re also encouraged to bring friends and snacks for yourself.

This will be a moderate hike up San Ysidro Canyon to the waterfall. Just when you start to get tired, it will be time to turn around and head downhill.

RSVP to Liz at liz@sbrotaract.com. RSVP preferred, but not required.
