May Day Unity Shoppe Volunteers Needed!

Unity Shoppe is the recipient of the KCOY Spring Food Drive now in full swing through May 7th!

May 1st is a designated Super Saturday, when KCOY film crews will visit the grocery stores where volunteers are stationed handing out “Unity shopping lists” to encourage the public to purchase a few extra items to donate for their low-income neighbors.

Unity Shoppe needs some volunteers.  Would you like to participate?  They’re looking for a few helpful hands at each of 6 local stores.  Let them know your availability for a 2-hr shift sometime between 10am and 3pm on May 1st and they’ll follow-up your reply with store location.

Contact Elvira Avina-Martinez at elvira@unityshoppe.org or 805-965-4122 x303. Thanks in advance for your support!

Night Hike: Tuesday April 27!

It’s still green in the mountains, so let’s go hiking!

We’ll meet in front of the Panda Express in La Cumbre Plaza at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27, at 6:30 p.m. From there, we’ll carpool to the trailhead.

As always, bring/wear:

  • sensible shoes with traction
  • water
  • a flashlight or headlamp
  • layered clothes
  • friends and/or dogs*

*If you bring a dog, you’ll likely be asked to drive your own car.

Please RSVP to liz@sbrotaract.com if you plan to attend and give her your phone number. Then we know who we’re waiting for. We usually leave promptly after 6:30.

We go at a comfortable pace. Beginners welcome, but be ready to walk 4 miles.

Watch The Final Inch

One Photo from Images of India

Did you know that polio, a crippling disease, could be eradicated in as little as two years from now? Since 1985, polio went from being present in 125 countries to only 4. Come learn about how it was done and how people are trying to wipe it out completely.

On April 22, you can:

  • Watch a special screening of “The Final Inch,” a documentary about the successes and challenges of eradicating polio worldwide.
  • View Images of India, photos by Joe Johnston.
  • Listen to a polio survivor tell his story.
  • Listen to first-hand experiences of immunizing children in India.
  • Pick up a treat at the bake sale.

The event is at Santa Barbara City College in the BC Forum and begins at 6 p.m. Parking will be free if you enter at the West Campus kiosk.

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED: Contact ana@sbrotaract.com to sign up.

Visit Rotaractors in Europe this August

Rotaract Travel Weeks will take place all over Europe between August 1 and 15, 2010. During this time, Rotaractors will travel within Europe.

You want to travel?

Step 1) Look at participating countries and pick the country you would like to visit.
List of countries: http://www.facebook.com/l/f4f4f;www.rotaract-travel-weeks.org/regions/europe/

Step 2) Go to the Facebook Event Page of the country you select. You can find it on the country list above.

Step 3) Post a comment to the Facebook Event page indicating that you are interested in visiting the country.
For example:
Request: Berlin, Hamburg, Northern Germany
Me and my friend from the Rotaract Club of Firence would like to visit the north of Germany. We´d like to travel to Berlin, Hamburg and maybe some other nice places which you can recommend. Is there anybody from this area? Are there any Rotaract clubs in these cities?

Step 4) When somebody answers you can send him or her a message and discuss the details. When exactly are you planning to arrive? How long would you stay? Are there Rotaractors who are able to host you? etc.

It’s that simple! You pay your travel expenses, and make international friends! You may find someone willing to let you stay with them for free, or, at the very least, get recommendations about great spots to see, eat and explore.
