A friendly reminder that it’s not too late to sign up for a volunteer day in exchange for a day pass to the Happiest Place on Earth – Disneyland! You can pick any event, but a bunch of Rotaractors are planning on working with Goleta Valley Beautiful this Saturday, Jan. 16 at 1PM.

You can sign up at this link. Just search by zipcode: 93117 and it should be the first result. Once you sign up and send a message to Ken Knight, you’ll get back an automated response. Tell Ken what event you want to work at and he’ll confirm then you can confirm with the Disney site.

If you have any questions, just email us at info@sbrotaract.com

Fonkoze Dinner

We would love to have you join us September 13th at a Haitian Night celebration that will be raising funds to support Fonkoze of Santa Barbara!  Fonkoze provides micro-loans and banking services for a rural community in Haiti.  The first shift is from 1-2:30pm helping to set up for the event, and volunteers from 5-8:45pm will help serve dinner and assist in take down.  Those at the later shift will be able to have some of the dinner and watch the Fonkoze presentation.  Event is in the Parish Hall at Trinity Episcopal Church.  Email stephanie@sbrotaract.com for more information.

Helping Is Not a Sole Activity

We had an amazing, nay spectacular, turnout for our shoe-packing volunteer day last Saturday. We helped the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise repack hundred’s of pairs of shoes so they could be easily transported down to Mexico where they will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who showed up and sweated it out.

Rotaract Cleans Up

IMG_8223

Six Rotaractors and 2 guests met at Ellwood Beach on Saturday and cleaned up the bluffs and sand. We received words of gratitude from no less than three people. We saw mountain bikers, joggers, dog-walkers, even a man about to launch an inflatable raft so he could fish. The area definitely is widely used so I know we made a positive impact by being there.

Earn Good Karma at the Beach

This Saturday we’re going to have a good time and keep a lot of trash out of the ocean. Here’s the plan:

What: A nice walk to the beach during which you happen to pick up a lot of trash. Surfrider Foundation will provide bags and gloves. There’s no nicer way to earn volunteer hours.

When: Saturday, August 15, at 10 a.m. – Noonish

Where: Ellwood beach bluffs. We’ll meet at the corner of Phelps and Cannon Green.

Directions: 101 North to Glen Annie/Storke. Exit and turn left toward the ocean. Pass Hollister and the shopping center. Turn right on Phelps (a light). Go straight until the road curves sharply to the right. Park on the dirt to your left and look for us!

Next steps: (1) Please RSVP to liz@sbrotaract.com to confirm that you can attend. (2) Invite more friends. If enough people sign up, we’ll bring donuts, too.

Why: We like clean, safe beaches and healthy oceans, dolphins and fish.

Special Event Meeting on July 21 – 6 PM

Mingle with other young professionals at our next meeting on Tuesday, July 21. Rotaract is partnering with Catalyst, a professional development lecture series, We’ll meet at the Canary Hotel (at the intersection of Carrillo and Chapala) at 6 p.m. to check in for the lecture, conduct a brief Rotaract meeting in the Coast bar at 6:15, and then grab seats at 6:45 to hear Niels Johnson-Lameijer’s advice on achieving your goals.

WHO: Niels Johnson-Lameijer spends his career helping individuals and organizations achieve their goals and live life to the fullest. He is an internationally certified Life Mastery & Corporate Coach, focusing on creating high-performance environments and an ideal work/life balance.

COST: $10 if you purchase your tickets in advance online at http://catalystsb.org/. $15 at the door.

WHY: (1) Ticket sales benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Barbara. (2) This is a great professional development/networking opportunity. (3) We’ll be there, letting you know what Rotaract is up to. (4) Happy hour prices.

Take 30 Seconds to Protect the Gaviota Coast

gaviota-from-cave

The Santa Barbara Surfrider chapter is a finalist in Barefoot Wine’s Beach Rescue Project to get $5,000 toward its efforts to protect the Gaviota Coast.

It’s a popularity contest, and Surfrider needs online votes to win. It’s in the lead, but another organization has been catching up more and more every day.

You can vote here once a day, every day, from now through August 15. I’ve bookmarked the page and vote every morning. Above is a photo of a small, already protected, part of the Gaviota Coast taken from inside a cave along the Gaviota Trail.

Volunteer Saturday at Stow House

What can I say, they love us at Stow House! We will be working with the Goleta Rotary clubs for some odds and ends at the Stow House in Goleta. The projects will be hands on and may range from sorting in the office to painting or moving equipment or items. Please dress appropriately.

When: 9AM to Noon

Where: Stow House, 304 N Los Carneros
