It’s Like the Baby Fair, But Older

Cottage Health System, the folks that brought us the delightful Baby Fair, are hosting a Senior Expo on Wednesday, November 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Earl Warren Showgrounds (Gate B).

Volunteers are needed
from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. to help with lunches (unloading, stacking, and distributing).

As a token of their appreciation, volunteers get lunch, which is from Cliff’s & Company (very tasty!).

About the Expo: There will be 90 to 100 exhibitors from a wide range of organizations and live music. Last year more than 700 older adults attended. For $5, they get admission, a flu shot, lunch, fitness testing and parking in Lot #2B or Lot #2A.

Sure, it’s a weekday, but not everyone has an 8-to-5 job, so if you can volunteer, please contact Rotaract Member Dana Goba at danagoba@hotmail.com or (805) 252-4796.

Rotaract Member Goes Abroad

Our membership chair Rita recently visited China!  Here’s what she had to say about the experience:

I went to China with other teachers from Dos Pueblos, San Marcos, and Carpinteria High. It was an amazing experience. The Chinese we met were so interested in learning more about Americans. We had a great time sharing and taking in the sites.

Bunny Festival Volunteer Date Changed

Due to the Zaca fire, the Bunny Festival at the Sunken Gardens has been moved to Sunday, October 28. Contact Amber Mills for details.

Fiesta Volunteers Needed!

As part of Santa Barbara’s largest annual festival, Fiesta, the Santa Barbara Rotaract club will be operating a booth in the De La Guerra Mercado. We will be selling pre-packaged drinks and food, such as water, Monster, FRS, Arizona Iced Tea, and ice cream! We will be operating the booth all day, every day of Fiesta, from 10 in the morning until midnight. We have a great location this year; right near the entrance between the churro lady and the fish taco stand! All proceeds from the sales we make will go to the Rotaract coffers for future volunteer and social activities. Oh, and by “we”, that would be YOU! The work will be split into 3 and 4 hour shifts with either 3 or 4 people working each shift. So, figure out when you can volunteer and go the signup form to let us know. The weekday daytime shifts will be particularly hard to fill, so if you can, please make something happen and volunteer for those times. The shift schedule will be finalized in the next couple of weeks.

Thanks in advance!

Wheelcharity Event

The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara’s annual Wheel Chairity Race to help raise funding to purchase wheelchairs for people challenged by severe disability and poverty in developing countries. These wheelchairs are 1. cheap, but 2. also inexpensive to maintain because they are made of widely available parts (bicycle tires, etc.)

The fundraiser is called Wheelcharity and it will be in the Ledbetter beach parking lot on Sunday June 3rd. From 12pm to 3pm.

We will need Rotaracters down there to encourage the racers/people donating and to also just help setup

Many Rotarians are pledging money ($500+ a piece) to this fundraiser. It will be casual and fun!

The race is $50 for an individual, $500 for a corporation (4 person relay), $200 for a small business (4 person relay)
The $50 cost of an entry is enough for 1 wheelchair. The $500 cost of a corporate relay is enough for 10 wheelchairs.

Displace Me – Send A Message About Uganda

Anyone who was a member of Rotaract last year has undoubtedly heard about the Invisible Children of war torn Uganda. On April 28th, 2007, thousands of Americans will converge on displacement camps in 15 major cities to send a message to politicians and media about the longest running war in Africa and demand change. In an event appropriately titled “Displace Me,” activists will bring attention to the 1.5 million Ugandan citizens that were forced to move overnight into large camps that are riddled with violence, disease, and other inhumane conditions.

Learn more about about the event here and about Invisible Children here and here.
