Night Hike on Monday!

p1_022.gifBurn off some pumpkin pie and share stories about silly Aunt Millie at our monthly night hike on Monday, Nov. 26, at 6:30 p.m. We’ll meet at the Jesusita trailhead on San Roque road just past the water treatment plant.

Wear:  Warm clothes, sensible shoes

Bring: A flashlight or headlamp, water, a friend (optional)

Trail: The trail will wander through brush and along a creek. Depending on the group, we may stop at the ranch or hike a bit higher toward (but not to) Inspiration Point.

Directions: From Highway 101, exit Las Positas and take it toward State St. Go past State St., where Las Positas turns into San Roque road, and keep going until you see the trailhead on your left. There is some parking there, but you may need to park down the road a little bit.

Click on the map for a bigger view of where the trailhead is.

Big Think Event on Wednesday

The topic of the Nov. 14 Big Think event is “How I Made My First Million, and How I Gave It Away.” Wouldn’t it be nice to be an expert on that topic?

Dr. Jean Weidemann, Patty DeDominic and Larry Crandell will speak at Hotel Andalucia at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow night. Happy hour starts at 5:30. The speakers will share their success stories and describe how the nonprofit scetor operates and what opportunities there are to get involved.

The event is hosted by the Santa Barbara Young Professionals Club, and it’s $10 for non-members, which includes appetizers. There will be a cash bar available for drinks. More information and RSVP here.

Runners Wanted: Saturday, Dec. 1

Seeking: Runners, joggers and walkers eager for some post-Thanksgiving calorie-burning fun.

The Rotary Clubs of Goleta host the Goleta Run for Youth — a 5K and 10K fun run — on Dec. 1. I want to get a group of Rotaract members to run and, if we get enough runners, have a bit of an in-club team competition. The race begins at 8 a.m.
The race begins at Dos Pueblos High School and heads around Lake Los Carneros and orchards. It’s a fairly flat course and a great race for beginners as well as people hoping to set a personal record.

Contact Liz at sb_rotaract@yahoo.com or comment on this blog entry if you’re interested in being part of the Rotaract team. More information about advance registration to follow, but there is a discount if you bring a pair of children’s shoes to donate.

Polar Bear Cards Fund Project

polar_bear.GIFThis is as close to Girl Scout Cookies as our club gets. We’re selling holiday cards with polar bears on them to raise money for our international fund. We’re in the early stages of planning a trip to aid the community of Morelia, Mexico. We’re aiming for a March trip with a couple of the local Rotary clubs.

The polar bear cards are $15 for a box of 12. The cards are blank inside and quite adorable outside. Rotaract earns $10 for every box we sell! If you are interested in buying a box or selling some boxes, please contact Liz at sb_rotaract@yahoo.com.

For every box a Rotaract member sells, they’ll get a raffle ticket. One prize will be a $50 cash gift card, and smaller prizes have yet to be determined.

If you have an office or a retail location where you could sell these, please let us know. We even have display setups. Thanks for your help!

Register for the Poverty Conference

The annual Rotary Poverty Conference is a rare chance to learn about poverty in a meaningful way. It’s not a TV commercial showing you hungry kids; it’s a gathering of experts and concerned community members looking at the trends of poverty throughout the world and practical, efficient ways to reduce it.

The event is free for Rotaract members (and it’s not too late to become a member). Optional lunch costs extra.

This year’s theme is Poverty and the Environment. The conference will be held at Cal State University Channel Islands (CSUCI) on November 17.

The day’s agenda is available at www.povertyconference.com. You can also download the registration form there. Again, it’s free for Rotaract members, so please fill out a form and send it in today. Then, email sb_rotaract@yahoo.com and let us know you’re going so we can help arrange carpools to Camarillo.

Just So We’re All Clear…

Literacy Is Good, and Scrabble Is Fun

You can still sign up to volunteer for the Scrabble Challenge for Literacy at the Santa Barbara Public Library on Friday September 28 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

(Click image for PDF brochure of the event)

The remaining training session for volunteers — who will serve as scorekeepers — is this Saturday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m.

You can also support the library by competing in the tournament. All skill levels are welcome — really! You’ll be eligible for great prizes (and I hear they have lots), and you’ll be keeping your brain sharp. Everyone wins. Registration to compete costs $20.

Email bschwartzberg@santabarbara.gov to sign up to play or volunteer(and please CC sb_rotaract@yahoo.com) or call 805-564-5619 and tell Beverly that you’re with Rotaract.

Sure, it’s a Friday night, but when the tournament is over, the night will still be young, and your brain will be warmed up for witty conversation. Sign up now!

Homework: Nominate Someone for 40 Under 40

pcbt.gif

Every year, the Pacific Coast Business Times honors 40 people under age 40 who are active in the business communities of Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.

If you or someone you know is under 40 and somewhat interesting, please nominate them. Bonus points are given for people who are active in community service in addition to their day job, who are owners of their own business, who have received recognition in their field, who are active in the business scene.

Whether they’re a lawyer, the owner of a tech company (hint hint) or an events coordinator for an active nonprofit, they could be eligible for a spot in the weekly business journal’s special report and a free dinner at the awards ceremony.

Type the person’s name, job title, company city, the person’s contact phone number, the reason for nominating them and the name and phone number of the nominator into an email. (Yes, you can nominate yourself.) Send it to newsroom@pacbiztimes.com soon — or by Sept. 7 at the latest. Questions? Call Managing Editor Ray Estrada at (805) 560-6950.

Disclaimer: I formerly worked for the Pacific Coast Business Times.

Rediscover Field Trips with Leadership SB County

leadership.gif

You could spend one Friday a month learning secrets to success and going behind-the-scenes in our county with Leadership Santa Barbara County.

As Dana explained at our August meeting, Leadership is a 9-month program (but only 1 day a month) that teaches useful leadership/life skills, creates amazing networking opportunities and helps you better understand where you live.

Each month the group tackles a different topic such as the environment, education, politics, arts and entertainment and community service. You spend part of the day getting lessons in leadership and the rest of the day participating in field trips, discussions and presentations about life in Santa Barbara. Some examples from last year’s class trips included the Chumash Casino, the police station, the Masonic Temple, the Museum of Art and MTD — to name a few.

Most businesses will cover the cost of participating because you become wiser about work and interacting with people. Learn more at www.leadsb.org. Applications are due by September 7.
