Watch The Final Inch

One Photo from Images of India

Did you know that polio, a crippling disease, could be eradicated in as little as two years from now? Since 1985, polio went from being present in 125 countries to only 4. Come learn about how it was done and how people are trying to wipe it out completely.

On April 22, you can:

  • Watch a special screening of “The Final Inch,” a documentary about the successes and challenges of eradicating polio worldwide.
  • View Images of India, photos by Joe Johnston.
  • Listen to a polio survivor tell his story.
  • Listen to first-hand experiences of immunizing children in India.
  • Pick up a treat at the bake sale.

The event is at Santa Barbara City College in the BC Forum and begins at 6 p.m. Parking will be free if you enter at the West Campus kiosk.

VOLUNTEERS STILL NEEDED: Contact ana@sbrotaract.com to sign up.

Visit Rotaractors in Europe this August

Rotaract Travel Weeks will take place all over Europe between August 1 and 15, 2010. During this time, Rotaractors will travel within Europe.

You want to travel?

Step 1) Look at participating countries and pick the country you would like to visit.
List of countries: http://www.facebook.com/l/f4f4f;www.rotaract-travel-weeks.org/regions/europe/

Step 2) Go to the Facebook Event Page of the country you select. You can find it on the country list above.

Step 3) Post a comment to the Facebook Event page indicating that you are interested in visiting the country.
For example:
Request: Berlin, Hamburg, Northern Germany
Me and my friend from the Rotaract Club of Firence would like to visit the north of Germany. We´d like to travel to Berlin, Hamburg and maybe some other nice places which you can recommend. Is there anybody from this area? Are there any Rotaract clubs in these cities?

Step 4) When somebody answers you can send him or her a message and discuss the details. When exactly are you planning to arrive? How long would you stay? Are there Rotaractors who are able to host you? etc.

It’s that simple! You pay your travel expenses, and make international friends! You may find someone willing to let you stay with them for free, or, at the very least, get recommendations about great spots to see, eat and explore.

Hike McMenemy Trail on Tuesday

It’s the best time of year to hike!

Please join Rotaract on Tuesday night for our next full moon night hike.

We’ll meet at Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in Montecito at 6:30 PM on March 30 and then carpool to the trailhead. We’re hiking McMenemy Trail, which will give us gorgeous views of the city and ocean at sunset and then allow us to peek at the moon after dark. All skill levels welcome.

Night Hike Tips:
– bring a flashlight or headlamp
– wear sensible shoes with decent traction
– bring some water
– well-behaved dogs and friends are welcome (although people with dogs may need to drive to the trailhead with the dog)

Please RSVP to liz@sbrotaract.com if you want us to be on the lookout for you at the meeting spot before we go to the trailhead. Provide your phone number.

New to Rotaract? No worries. Come join us.

Welcome the Rotaract Club of San Luis Obispo to the Family

You may not recognize all the faces in the photo above. That’s because some of them are members of the Rotaract Club of San Luis Obispo, our neighbors to the north.

They’ve been doing great stuff for years under the leadership of Founding President Dominic Tartaglia. Now, the club celebrates its official charter.

Up for a mini road trip? We’re invtied to attend the Charter Celebration on March 13 at 6 p.m. at the Tartaglia Ranch* in San Luis Obispo. Please RSVP to Holly Dragovich at hdragovich@gmail.com by March 6 to ensure that they have enough steak, salad, garlic bread, ranch beans and cake for everyone. This event is BYOB — bring your own beverage. Adults may bring adult beverages.

* Please ask Holly for the ranch address or Tara, Liz or David. Since this is a private home, we are not posting the address on the blog.

Hike with Us on Thursday, Feb. 25

It’s time to get back on the trail, and we’re boldly going where no Rotaract Night Hike has gone before: Snyder Trail.

If you’ve clicked that link you might be intimidated. Don’t be. We’re not hiking the whole thing. We like night hikes for the fresh air, the good company and the evening exercise.

We’ll walk up the trail, using our flashlights to admire the wildflowers and trying our best to take artsy photos of the moon while talking about good places to eat and how to save the world. Then, when we get tired, we’ll turn around and walk downhill.

We don’t plan to go to the top … this time.

Show up at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 25, in front of the Panda Express at La Cumbre Plaza. We’ll carpool from there to the trailhead to minimize the number of adventure passes we need and our carbon footprint.

Tips:

  • Bring a flashlight or headlamp
  • Bring water and a light snack. If you’re prone to hunger, eat before we meet.
  • Wear sensible shoes and layers for the cold night air
  • Optional, but enjoyable: Bring a camera, your well-behaved dog, your mostly well-behaved friends

Please RSVP to liz@sbrotaract.com with your phone number so we know who to wait for before leaving for the trailhead. Plan on about 3 hours overall, including drive time.

Rotaract Hosts Holiday Fun

Emily and Courtlin show off their white elephant gifts at the Rotaract holiday party.

Thanks to all who attended the Rotaract Holiday Party, the party organizers and California Pasta for donating dinner.

Here’s to 2010! The fun starts with our first meeting on Tuesday, January 5, at 6:30 PM at Silvergreens in Santa Barbara.

This Week: Party Instead of Meeting

There will be no meeting on Tuesday, December 15.

Instead, we will celebrate together at our annual holiday party on Friday, December 18.

We don’t plan to share the party details with the worldwide Interweb, but you can find out more by emailing lucille@sbrotaract.com.

The Rotaract Club of Santa Barbara holiday party is home to one of the three best white elephant gift exchanges in town, tasty morsels and lots of fabulous 20-somethings. If you make the party your first Rotaract event, I assure you it won’t be your last one. You’ll be back for more. Just introduce yourself to Lucille via email first. lucille@sbrotaract.com.

Night Hike Canceled Due to Rain

Sorry to report, but tonight’s hike is off.

Night Hike Planned for Dec. 10

It’s time for another night hike!

This will not be a hike with a full moon, so please bring flashlights or headlamps and dress warmly.

We will meet at 6:30 PM in front of the Panda Express in La Cumbre Plaza on Thursday, Dec. 10. From there, we’ll carpool to a trailhead. The hike destination will vary depending on weather conditions. For example, we may go to Cielo Vista trail to enjoy great views of Santa Barbara’s night lights, or we may go enjoy the bluffs and beach of the Douglas Preserve.

You can bring friends and dogs.

Weather: If it’s a little rainy, we’ll still go. If it’s a lot rainy, we won’t. We’ll probably hike for no more than 2 hours.

Please RSVP to liz@sbrotaract.com with your phone number so she’ll know to expect you.

If you do not RSVP but plan to attend, be sure to check the Rotaract Website at 5 PM on Thursday to confirm that the hike is still on. If you RSVP to Liz, she’ll contact you if plans change.

Looking forward to hiking with you!

Hit the Trail on Nov. 11

Night hike cancelled!

Rotaract will lead its monthly night hike tonight, November 11. We’ll meet at Old Mission Santa Barbara at 6 p.m. and carpool to a trailhead. Beginners welcome.

Please bring a flashlight or headlamp, warm layered clothes and water. Friends and dogs are also welcome.

If you want to make sure we’re waiting for you, please RSVP to liz@sbrotaract.com.
