Happy Hikers Survive Again

Instead of our traditional full moon night hike, we went for a new moon night hike.

Some awards:
Brightest flashlight: David Vo
Best accessory: Mel Truelove for Kona the dog
Best rollercoaster story: Ana Ruvalcaba

A big welcome to Aaron. And thanks for the wine, Laura. We wish you luck in the Bay Area.

Hit the Trail on August 20

Our next night hike is Thursday, August 20. We’ll meet at the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on Coast Village Road in Montecito at 6:30 p.m. We’ll carpool to the San Ysidro Trailhead from there.

Tips for Hiking with Rotaract:

  • Bring water
  • Dress in layers
  • Wear sensible shoes
  • Have a headlamp or flashlight
  • Invite a friend.
  • Dogs count as friends.

Show up, and the fun will follow.

Nutrition Tips & the Usual Fun at Next Meeting

Join us at 6:30 p.m. August 4 at Silvergreens in Santa Barbara for our next Rotaract meeting.

Guest Speaker: Natalie Olivas, a personal trainer at SB Training, will share nutrition tips for busy professionals on the go. She’ll share good reminders about how to be healthy and likely teach you a few things you don’t know.

Natalie is certified by the International Sports Studies Association. She’s a Gaucho alumna who majored in biochemistry with a minor in exercise and health sciences.

In addition to our guest speaker, we’ll give updates about the next service projects and social activities. Stay tuned for our next beach cleanup, night hike and game night.

See You at the Night Hike

It’s that time again. Let’s hit the trail for an evening hike.

Come along on July 30 as we get a little evening exercise, chat with friends and survey some of the fire damage to the Tunnel Road and Inspiration Point trails.

We will meet in front of the Panda Express at La Cumbre plaza at 6 p.m. From there, we will carpool to the trailhead.

I recommend that you bring water, a flashlight/headlamp and a small snack. Please wear sensible shoes for walking and dress in layers.

Invite your friends. They’re welcome to join! Cameras, dogs and binoculars are also welcome.

If you RSVP to Liz with your phone number, we’ll wait at the meeting spot for a little bit. liz @ sbrotaract.com.

We Cleaned the Beach!

There is less trash on a Goleta beach now thanks to the hard work of 11 Rotaractors and 2 Surfrider volunteers who spent a couple of hours on Saturday morning cleaning up a beach near Ellwood. They donned latex gloves and struggled with fragile corn-starch trash bags to collect all sorts of trash that would otherwise have washed out into the ocean.
Great work, team! Photos are posted on our Flickr page.
Special thanks to Surfrider for joining us, teaching us a bit about the coast and giving us very cool canvas bags so that we can use plastic ones less often in the store.

Beach Cleanup on Saturday, March 7

Help us keep trash out of the ocean and clutter out of our green areas.

When: 10 a.m. – Noon  on Saturday, March 7

Where:  at the intersection of Phelps and Canon Green in Goleta. From 101 northbound, exit Storke. Left onto Storke. Right onto Hollister. Left at Pacific Oaks. Right onto Phelps.

screenhunter_02-mar-02-1521

What: We’ll spread out to clean up part of the Ellwood Bluffs and the coastline.

Why: We don’t like trash in the ocean. And you can learn where the hidden trampoline is while getting service hours for Rotaract.

Notes: We’ll provide gloves and trash bags. If you have any trash-grabbing tools other than your hands, please bring those along.  I recommend bringing a water bottle. Snacks will be provided.

Tour Northern Italy

Last year, past president and one of the club founders, Liz Werhane, went on a trip through the northwest region on Italy. She was the only person that represented our country and came back with tales of new friends and gelato.

District 2030 is once again hosting their tour for 2009. The trip will take place from March 20 to the 29th, 2009.

Applications (CV) should be sent to internazionale2030@yahoo.it by December 31, 2008. Additional information can be found in this brochure [PDF]

Diary of a Rotaract Weekend

This weekend we hosted 6 Rotaractors from San Diego and 1 from D.C. Now we have more than 7 new friends (seriously) and a strong urge to go visit San Diego.

Here’s the short version of our weekend:
Friday night: It was late, and it was Goleta, which meant one thing: Freebird’s burritos (and quesoritos) for all.
Saturday: We drove up the coast to the Arroyo Hondo Preserve to pull out thistle, improve drainage on a trail and prune along the way. Then we rewarded ourselves with lunch, cookies and lounging at Goleta Beach. We hit the hot tub and then cleaned up to head downtown. While our guests had dinner at Paradise Cafe, some Santa Barbara Rotaractors got ready for the evening’s party. And then, we had an evening of, ahem, fellowship and lemon meringue pie from the Goleta Lemon Festival.
Sunday: We met up in the morning to visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History. We saw dinosaurs, bugs, gems and very large squid. Then it was off to McConnell’s for some ice cream and a farewell.
Thanks to everyone who was involved. Send your photos to david@sbrotaract.com, and we’ll add them to the photo set for the weekend.
