Rotary Accepting Peace Fellow Applications

If you have a bachelor’s degree in international relations, sustainable development, public administration, peace studies or a related field and some work experience in one of these areas, you may qualify for funding for a two-year master’s fellowship or a three-month professional development certificate fellowship.

Rotary selects 100 participants every year to get training in the root causes of conflict, theories of international relations and effective models of cooperation and negotiation. The programs are hosted at these centers:

Chulalongkorn University; Bangkok, Thailand
Duke University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, USA
International Christian University; Tokyo, Japan
Universidad del Salvador; Buenos Aires, Argentina
University of Bradford; West Yorkshire, England
University of Queensland; Brisbane, Australia

Rotary is accepting applications now for the 2011-2012 year. Our Rotary District, District 5240, usually nominates one candidate each year. They must make their recommendation by July 1, so it’s best to get your application in soon. Read how to apply here. If you are very interested, let one of the Rotaract officers know. We can connect you with local Rotarians who can guide you in preparing your application.

Rotaract Paves Way to Rotary

Check out this wonderful article on Rotary.org about a youth exchange alumni who is now a Rotarian and member of UNESCO.

Noirtin would like to see more Rotaractors take what he calls the “natural next step” and become Rotarians. Working side by side on projects, he says, is the best way to make the transition smoother.

Helping Is Not a Sole Activity

We had an amazing, nay spectacular, turnout for our shoe-packing volunteer day last Saturday. We helped the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise repack hundred’s of pairs of shoes so they could be easily transported down to Mexico where they will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who showed up and sweated it out.

Volunteer Saturday at Stow House

What can I say, they love us at Stow House! We will be working with the Goleta Rotary clubs for some odds and ends at the Stow House in Goleta. The projects will be hands on and may range from sorting in the office to painting or moving equipment or items. Please dress appropriately.

Casino Night Fundraiser

The Carpinteria Rotary Clubs are asking for our help in volunteering at this fundraiser. It is their largest annual fundraiser of the year and will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2009 from 7PM-10PM. They will need hosts, servers, ticket takers, et cetera.

The event takes place at 5315 Foothill Road

If anyone is interested they can get back to me at jennifer.wang@sbrotaract.com. We need actual commitments so that I can submit the names to Rotary.

World Rotaract Week

Mexico Travel Opportunity

Travel to Mexico accompanying Rotarians on a clean water project. Our club is donating a system in Patzcuaro, Mexico and you have the opportunity to visit the village and Rotarians there as an ambassador.

Dates: May 4 to 10.

Cost (est): $1000 out of pocket, half of which will be reimbursed.

Each year, Rotarians around the world do a service project on the same day. This is a demonstration of their unified dedication to serving others. This year, the Rotarian at Work Day is Saturday, February 21. We are officially paired with Goleta Noontime at Stow House, near Lake Los Carneros. However, if you are interested, you are welcome to work at any of the following clubs. Goodbye Polio

Yesterday, Bill Gates, of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, spoke at the Rotary International Assembly and committed an additional $225M, on top of the $100 donated in 2007 (as a challenge grant). Germany and the United Kingdom have promised $280M over the next five years. Watch the video of the announcement below.
