Come With Us to Disneyland

IMG_8332

A friendly reminder that it’s not too late to sign up for a volunteer day in exchange for a day pass to the Happiest Place on Earth – Disneyland! You can pick any event, but a bunch of Rotaractors are planning on working with Goleta Valley Beautiful this Saturday, Jan. 16 at 1PM.

You can sign up at this link. Just search by zipcode: 93117 and it should be the first result. Once you sign up and send a message to Ken Knight, you’ll get back an automated response. Tell Ken what event you want to work at and he’ll confirm then you can confirm with the Disney site.

If you have any questions, just email us at info@sbrotaract.com

Helping Is Not a Sole Activity

IMG_8291

We had an amazing, nay spectacular, turnout for our shoe-packing volunteer day last Saturday. We helped the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise repack hundred’s of pairs of shoes so they could be easily transported down to Mexico where they will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to everyone who showed up and sweated it out.

Earn Good Karma at the Beach

This Saturday we’re going to have a good time and keep a lot of trash out of the ocean. Here’s the plan:

What: A nice walk to the beach during which you happen to pick up a lot of trash. Surfrider Foundation will provide bags and gloves. There’s no nicer way to earn volunteer hours.

When: Saturday, August 15, at 10 a.m. – Noonish

Where: Ellwood beach bluffs. We’ll meet at the corner of Phelps and Cannon Green.

Directions: 101 North to Glen Annie/Storke. Exit and turn left toward the ocean. Pass Hollister and the shopping center. Turn right on Phelps (a light). Go straight until the road curves sharply to the right. Park on the dirt to your left and look for us!

Next steps: (1) Please RSVP to liz@sbrotaract.com to confirm that you can attend. (2) Invite more friends. If enough people sign up, we’ll bring donuts, too.

Why: We like clean, safe beaches and healthy oceans, dolphins and fish.

Volunteer Saturday at Stow House

What can I say, they love us at Stow House! We will be working with the Goleta Rotary clubs for some odds and ends at the Stow House in Goleta. The projects will be hands on and may range from sorting in the office to painting or moving equipment or items. Please dress appropriately.

When: 9AM to Noon

Where: Stow House, 304 N Los Carneros

Volunteers Needed at Race for Special Olympics

Rotaract is recruiting volunteers for Vicki’s 3,000m race on June 6.

Runners of all talent are welcome at the approximately 2-mile race on the Santa Barbara City College track. It’s only $8 to register, and all proceeds go to Special Olympics Santa Barbara.

Starting at 8 a.m., volunteers are needed to help with:

  • registration
  • managing the finish line
  • helping with refreshments
  • randomly running around and cheering

You can make a big difference in just a couple of hours, and you’ll have done your good deed for the day before brunch.

Please contact liz@sbrotaract.com to sign up to volunteer.

Be a Docent for CALM’s Design House

Those of you who attended the May 5 general meeting may remember a volunteer opportunity proposed by CALM’s director, Cecilia. This will not be an official Rotaract project but those interested in helping should take note of the details below.

The CALM Design House is nearing completion and it is getting very exciting!  This year CALM is extremely fortunate to have a beautiful knoll top hacienda style home, Casa Robles, for their Design House.  Originally designed by famed architect Chester Carjola, the 4,500 square foot home is situated on 2 acres of  picturesque gardens.  It is going to be spectacular and lots of fun to tour.

We have scheduled two options for the docent training:

Thursday, May 14th, 1-2:00 pm at CALM or Wednesday, May 20th, 5:30-6:30 pm at CALM.
You only need to attend one training session. At the training you will receive a packet of details and information about touring, the house and CALM.
Please RSVP to this email which session you will be attending.  Thank you.

Please bring your calendars with you so that you can sign up to work on the days and shifts that fit into your schedule. We are asking that you commitment to working at least three shifts during the month of June.

The Design House will be open June 3rd – June 28th, Wednesday through Sunday 11 am to 4 pm.  The house will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays.

Docent shifts will be 10:45 am-1:30 pm or 1:15-4:15 pm. (you will need to allow parking and shuttle time)

If you are unable to attend either of the training sessions please email me and I will make arrangements to get you the docent information packet. Shirley Waxman ~969-4563 or kswaxman@gmail.com.

3 Ways to Help the Red Cross

Many people have asked about helping the Red Cross. I spoke with the CEO of our local Red Cross Chapter this afternoon, and here are three ways you can help:

1) For those who completed the shelter manager training in the fall, please contact the Red Cross to let them know you were trained and are available. They have limited computer access right now and may not have your contact information handy. They can likely put you to work. Call Julie at 698-1611. If she in unavailable, try Louise at 450-5921.

2) There are ongoing volunteer opportunities, but they want to train you first.

The Red Cross asks that you register for the trainings at the Goleta Community Center (5679 Hollister in Old Town). Stop by at any time. This training is free. For more information about training and volunteering, call 729-6885.

3) Donate money at http://www.sbredcross.org/. You should have no problem finding the red Donate Now! buttons.

The Red Cross estimates this fire will cost it more than $200,000, including recovery operations.

3.5) Share this information with your friends.

St. Patrick’s Day Fundraiser

We would love to have you join us March 15th at an Irish Night celebration that will be raising funds to support Fonkoze of Santa Barbara!  Fonkoze provides micro-loans and banking services for a rural community in Haiti.  The first shift is from 12:30-3pm helping to set up for the event, and volunteers from 4-7:45pm will help serve dinner and assist in take down.  Those at the later shift will be able to have some of the Irish stew and watch the Fonkoze presentation.  Event is in the Parish Hall at Trinity Episcopal Church.
